BHP Billiton Nickel West (BHPBNW) conducted a Select Study for the NDS1 Nickel Project from April 2010 to June 2012. The proposed NDS1 Project comprises the development of open cut pits to the south of the existing Mt Keith mine and adjacent to the Wanjarri Nature Reserve, a transport corridor between the pits and the Mt Keith processing plant, drainage line diversions, modifications to the Mt Keith processing operations and borefield development.
Bioscope Environmental took a leadership and project management role during this phase of Project development by scoping and implementing a comprehensive environmental work program on behalf of BHPBNW. During the early stages of the work program, we established an environmental assessment strategy in conjunction with the Office of the EPA and then coordinated the comprehensive program of environmental baseline investigations required for the environmental assessment process. Data from these investigations were used for preliminary impact assessment and development of environmental management measures, with the outcomes of these processes documented in draft Environmental Referrals and Mining Proposals. Bioscope Environmental also developed a Stakeholder Engagement Plan for the Project. In addition, we initiated mine closure planning for the NDS1 Project and conducted a technical review of the Mt Keith Mine Closure Plan.
